There are two basic types of wig ; those that are synthetic and those made from human hair. Synthetic hairpieces are made of monofilament fiber and are so closely related to human hair that many people have a difficult time distinguishing between the two.
These are lighter weight and require minimal upkeep because the hair or fiber used in them maintains its shape, curl, and texture. A person purchasing a synthetic wig would not be able to change its style or color but would need to purchase a new wig when they want a new hairstyle. Because the synthetic wig is the less expensive option, this may be do-able for the length of time the person will need to wear the hairpiece.
Choosing Types of Wig
Human hair wigs are generally more expensive and looks extremely natural. They are usually more expensive but they can be cut, styled, colored, or permed as your tastes change while you are wearing the wig.
While the synthetic wig does not require much in the way of maintenance, the human hair wig requires that the owner shampoo, set, curl, and/or condition it as they would their own hair. A person going through physical difficulties like chemotherapy might not feel up to this level of maintenance and may do better with a synthetic wig.
There is one alternative that uses both human hair and synthetic hair called the human hair-synthetic blended wig. This may serve the person who wants the more
natural looking Highlight wig but who cannot spend much time on its maintenance.
The hair used in human hair wigs is made from Chinese, Indonesian, Indian, and Caucasian or European hair. Caucasian/European hair is usually the strongest and most durable but is also the most expensive; therefore, a wig may be most often made from Chinese or Indian hair.
Depending on what types of wig you choose, you will need special products to care for it. Synthetic or blended wigs will need to be shampooed and conditioned and then carefully blotted dry with a soft towel. Once the major portion of the water is out of the wig, it can be allowed to dry naturally on the wig stand. Human hair wigs also need special shampoo products formulated for processed hair because of the amount of processing to which they have already been subjected. Caring for them properly will protect your purchase.
What is the purpose of wearing a wig?
In our culture, people may wear a wig for several different reasons which may include either prosthetic, cosmetic, or convenience reasons. In fact, you might be surprised by the number of people you know who wear wigs simply because of their varied uses.
People who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy treatments or another medical reason sometimes choose not to wear a wig but most people in this situation choose to wear them. They may also have several because they look on this time in their lives as a great time to try hairdos and hair colors.
The convenience of a wig that maintains its style may be another reason that people choose to wear wigs. While they have to be washed, dried, and styled, they can go for longer periods of time between this care routine than can our natural hair.
Cosmetically, a person may choose to wear a wig because his or her own hair is thinning or just not thick enough to style easily. Many men wear toupees for this reason and more women are looking into the possibility of wearing a wig when they see their own hair thinning to the point of being able to see the scalp under their hair.
Another section of the population that dons wigs for various reasons are actors and actresses. To give a character a new persona or to simply change their hairstyle without having to wait for the actor s hair to grow to the proper length, wigs are a great addition to the wardrobe closet of many TV, movie, and stage productions.
